The Coolidge family, which includes President Calvin Coolidge, was one of the earliest American families to immigrate to the New World. John Coolidge immigrated from Cambridgeshire, England around 1630, and the family later moved to Massachusetts and Pennsylvania Dutch country. The Eisenhauer family, meanwhile, immigrated from Karlsbrunn, Germany in the 1740s, and subsequently settled in Texas and Kansas.

It also includes best royal descents for each president, and 150 charts highlighting kinships among American presidents. In addition to the presidents listed in the book, there are appendices detailing the kinships of American presidents to Mayflower settlers, royal descendants, and other European royal families.

The 2009 edition of Roberts’ Ancestors of American President, published by Family Tree Magazine, is nearly twice as comprehensive as the first edition. It includes ancestor tables for each president from Washington to Obama, the best royal descents, and 150 charts detailing kinships between the presidents. There are also appendices listing kin of Pocahontas, connections to the modern British royal family, and European royalty.
This book is a wonderful place to start digging. It is a great source and supercedes the works of Burke and others published in 1977 and 1981. However, there are some errors in Roberts’ Ancestors of American Presidents. The book is still highly recommended, but there are some important issues that haven’t been addressed. For instance, there are several presidents who are not Irish in descent.

A brief biographical sketch of each president and their ancestors is included in the back of each chapter.
